Subterraneous Sheltering | 2024

In 2024 I decided to visually imagine fertile spaces – that exist between what is and what could be – from which creative responses might emerge. As a collage artist I decided to use high-fashion magazines as the raw material for this exploration. I chose these because these magazines are cultural icons, they are beautiful and inviting, yet when you peel back the layers, these images are rife with white-washing – glossing over the magnitude and importance of social issues – and green-washing – misleading spins on environmental issues. I harvested the “positive points of potential” from these magazines – beautiful color and rich patterns and textures – and used these as building blocks to create imagined “sheltering spaces” in which new possibilities might incubate and eventually emerge.
